Commuter Backpacks & Bags

Rush hour is not a gentle place for a bag. Our commuter backpacks carry a laptop, a lunch and a change of shoes through rain, bike racks and the Northern line, then still look right at your desk.

Commuter Backpacks & Bags

What makes a commuter backpack different from an ordinary backpack?

Three things: a padded laptop sleeve so your machine survives a packed carriage, an interior split into pockets so you are not searching for a keycard at a barrier, and a weather-resistant outer for the walk between transport and desk. A hiking or gym backpack usually has none of those, which is why it feels wrong for a commute.

Which style suits my commute?

If you walk and train it, a medium backpack is the default: weight across both shoulders, laptop protected. If you cycle or run in, look at our cycling backpacks for something compact and close to your back, or a sling bag for a light run commute. If you swap between office and client meetings, a messenger sits more naturally in a formal setting.

Are ROKA London commuter backpacks waterproof?

They are weather-resistant, which covers the realistic scenario: rain on the walk to the station, a wet bike rack, a bag put down on damp ground. They are made from recycled nylon and recycled canvas, both of which shed light rain rather than soaking it up. They are not sealed dry bags, so in sustained heavy rain treat a laptop as you would in any backpack.

Will my laptop fit?

Most of the commuter styles include a padded laptop sleeve, and the size it takes varies between the small, medium and large options, so check the individual product page against your machine. As a rule of thumb, the medium and large backpacks are the ones to look at for a work laptop, while the small sizes suit a tablet or a compact device.

Can a commuter backpack still look right in the office?

That is the whole design brief. The commuter styles use clean shapes and a matte finish rather than a sports look, so the same bag reads fine in a meeting and on a bike. If your workplace is more formal, the messenger and work bag styles are the safer pick, and both are covered in this collection.

Commuter Backpacks Built for a Two-Mode Commute

Most commutes are not one journey. They are a walk, a train, a cycle and a dash across a car park, usually with a laptop involved and often in the rain. A commuter backpack has to hold up through all of it and still look right when you sit down at your desk.

Padded laptop sleeves take the shock out of a crowded carriage, and separate pockets mean a charger, a keycard and headphones each have a home instead of settling at the bottom of the bag. Roll top styles like the Canfield let you pack a jacket or gym kit on top when the day needs it.

If you cycle or run your commute, the styles in our cycling backpacks collection keep the load compact and close to your back, and a sling bag suits a short run in. Carrying a laptop, files and gym kit? Size up to a medium or large.

ROKA London is a certified B Corp, and Have Care runs through the whole collection: recycled nylon and recycled canvas, including our matte canvas spun from plastic bottles, weather-resistant enough for a wet platform, and vegan throughout.
